Estimate your roof size and cost

Choose an option in each step. The numbers on the right change as you click.

1. Roof type

What roofing material do you want?

2. Home footprint

The ground area the house covers, not total living space. A 2-story home with 2,000 sq ft of living space has a footprint near 1,000 sq ft.

3. Roof pitch

How steep is the roof? Low looks almost flat. Steep roofs are hard to walk on.

4. Layers of roofing now

This matters for a replacement. Not sure? Choose 1 layer.

Priced by the job

Metal, tile, cedar shake and flat roofs depend on the system, structure and details, so we price them after a free inspection. Your area and squares above are a solid starting point.

This is an estimate, not a quote. Decking repairs, flashing, access, permits and extra layers change the final number. Your free inspection gives the exact price in writing.

How it works

How we estimate your roof

Four steps turn a few choices into numbers you can plan with.

Footprint

Your home footprint is the ground area under the roof. It is easier to know than the roof itself.

Pitch factor

Steeper roofs have more surface. We multiply by a factor of 1.05 for low pitch up to 1.40 for very steep.

Overhang

Eaves and rakes extend past the walls. We add about 7% for the overhang.

Squares and waste

We divide the area by 100 to get squares, then add 10% for cuts, starters and waste.

Pitch guide

Which roof pitch do you have?

Pitch is written as rise over 12. Match your roof to one of these.

Low, up to 4/12

Almost flat to gentle. Common on porches, additions and some rowhouses. Easy to walk on.

Moderate, 5/12 to 7/12

The most common slope on single-family homes. Walkable with care.

Steep, 8/12 to 10/12

Clearly steep. Crews use added safety gear, which can raise labor cost.

Very steep, 12/12 and up

A 45 degree slope or more. Needs staging and extra safety planning.

What the numbers mean

Use them to compare estimates and plan an order.

Roof area

The surface of the roof in square feet, including slope and overhang.

Roofing squares

100 sq ft each. Contractors price and order roofing by the square.

Squares with waste

Adds 10% for cuts, hips, valleys and starter courses.

Shingle bundles

Three bundles per square for asphalt shingles, rounded up.

Price range

A typical range for a full asphalt shingle replacement, including tear-off and cleanup.

Next step

A free inspection turns this range into a written, itemized price.

FAQ

Roofing calculator questions, answered

How does the roofing calculator work?

It starts with your home footprint, multiplies by a pitch factor for slope and adds a margin for the roof overhang to estimate roof area. It converts that to roofing squares, adds 10% for waste and, for asphalt shingles, counts bundles and a typical price range.

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof. Contractors measure and price roofs in squares. A 1,700 sq ft roof is 17 squares.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Most asphalt shingles come three bundles to a square. The calculator rounds up after adding 10% for waste, cuts and starter courses.

How accurate is this calculator?

It gives a planning estimate. Complex rooflines, dormers, valleys and skylights add area. A free inspection measures your actual roof and gives a written price.

How much does a roof replacement cost on Staten Island?

A full asphalt shingle replacement runs about $5,000 to $15,000 or more, and small roofs start near $5,000. See the roofing costs guide for what moves the price.

Why does the pitch change my roof area?

A steeper roof has more surface than the ground below it. A 12/12 roof has about 40% more surface than a flat one covering the same footprint.

How do I find my roof pitch?

Pitch is rise over 12 inches of run. Hold a level flat against the roof edge and measure the vertical rise at the 12 inch mark, or ask us to measure during your inspection.

Why are metal, tile and cedar shake prices not shown?

Those systems change a lot with the profile, structure and details, so we price them after an inspection. The area and squares still help you plan.

Does the price include removing old layers?

The 2 layers option adds an allowance for extra tear-off. Rotted decking, flashing and permits are quoted on their own lines in your written estimate.
